France - Marseilles
Marseilles is the second largest city in France after Paris.
During WWI, the port of Marseilles had an important part to play in the transportation of troops. Troops departed from here to the Ottoman front and the Dardanelles; and military ships brought back the wounded into Marseille. Troops came in from the French colonies – Senegal, Tunisia, Morocco – and also from the British Empire.
