Persia (Iran) - Resht
Resht is the largest city on Iran’s Caspian coast and the capital city of Gilan Province. It is a major trade centre between Caucasia, Russia and Iran using the port of Bandar-e Anzali also referred to as Enzeli). Historically, Resht was a major transport and business centre which connected Iran to Russia and Europe, known as the “Gate of Europe”. In a paper read to the Archam Society many years later, Cyril Sladden described it as “a considerable town which lies buried amidst the forest and rice fields some 20 miles from the sea”. He was in Resht from the latter part of September to mid November 1918 and was there at the time of the Turkish Armistice celebration).
