Warwickshire - Sutton Coldfield: Somerfield, Manor Hill
Somerfield was a private house with large garden on Manor Hill, Sutton Coldfield, which was taken over during WW1 as a hostel for members of the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps who worked at the nearby Southern Command Depot in Sutton Park. There were four houses on Manor Hill used as hostels. Somerfield was next to the Manor House, which may also have been one of the hostels. Mela Brown Constable lived at Somerfield Hostel from October 1917 to January 1918.
At the time of the 1911 census it was occupied by William Crozier, a master goldsmith, and his family. Whilst the Manor House still exists in 2018, it is thought that the other large houses in the vicinity have been redeveloped.
