Alfred George Hayman, who spent a short time in Wickhamford living with his aunt and uncle, Benjamin and Emily Ann Carter of Field Farm, is remembered on the war memorial in the Church of St Mary Magdalene, Great Elm, near Frome. Alfred grew up at Hapsford House, Great Elm.
The memorial takes the form of a Celtic cross with decorated shaft and octagonal base, and bears the inscription:
TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY/ OF / THOSE OF THIS PARISH/ WHO FELL IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918
The memorial was unveiled in November 1921 by the Marquis of Bath. Alfred Hayman’s name is one of five on the memorial.
