Private Francis James Green (1893-1959) was living in Wickhamford with his wife, Laura Alice (née Turner), when a son, Leslie Thomas, was baptised in the church on 14th Feb 1915. His occupation in the Baptism Register was entered as ‘Private’. Francis had been born in Eckington, the son of George Richard Green. In 1911 he had been working at Northway Mill, Tewkesbury, as a waggoner.
The Parish Magazine of July 1915 reported: “Private F Green, of the Grenadier Guards, who was invalided home seriously ill some time ago, is still confined to bed.”
No military records for this man have been traced, but in 1939 for the Register drawn up at the outbreak of the Second World War, he was living at 10 Church Bank, Evesham. He was described then as a ‘Disabled Pensioner’ and with the additional information ‘Private Grenadier Guards, 20291’. This service number was issued in November 1914.
