MASTERS, Joseph John Hedley (1895-1920) – Royal Field Artillery

Gunner Joseph John Hedley Masters (1895-1920) was born in Wickhamford and was a five-year-old living with his parents, Hedley and Annie at Longdon Hill House in 1901.  His father was a fruit grower at that time, but later moved to Kidderminster.

Gunner Masters was in B Battery, 306th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery (No 830261).  Only his Medal index card survives (also giving a second service number of 2058) and the Victory and British War medals were issued.  306th Brigade was raised in Worcestershire and it is highly likely that he saw action.

He died of ‘phthisis’ (probably TB) on 25th October 1920 at Hartlebury and is buried in Bengeworth Cemetery on the East side of Old Ground (Section C, Plot No 8).
