The 1951 census was taken on the night of Sunday 8th April 1951. It was the first census to ask about household amenities and was the largest so far attempted in the country.
The release of the 1951 census in January 2052 will be the first census released for 30 years (the last one made public was the 1921 census released on 6th January 2022). The 1941 census did not take place due to the ongoing Second World War, and the records for England and Wales from the 1931 census were destroyed in a fire in 1942 whilst in storage. An important interim “mini-census”, the 1939 Register, was taken on 29th September 1939, soon after the outbreak of war, which helps to bridge the gap.
Family historians thus have a long time to wait before the release of the next census. In the meantime, Tom Locke and Val Harman have made a "best guess" of the people who were likely to have appeared on the 1951 Wickhamford census.
