Church of England
Arranged by Sandra Sparrow
The Queen holds the title, founded in the 1530s, of “Defender of the Faith and Supreme Governor of the Church of England”. The Queen appoints Bishops, Archbishops and Deans who all swear an oath of allegiance to the sovereign. She was the first monarch to inaugurate and address the General Synod in 1970 (the managing body of the Church of England that meets every 5 years) and is known for her religious diversity and tolerance both in the UK and across the Commonwealth.
