BADSEY & HONEYBOURNE FAMILIES UNITED
A pretty wedding took place at St James’ Church, Badsey, on Saturday when Miss Joan Bird, eldest daughter of Mr & Mrs C J Bird of The Garage, Bretforton Road, Badsey, was married to Mr Albert Lake, third son of Mr & Mrs F Lake of Buckle Street, Honeybourne. Extremely popular in Badsey, the bride, who is a native of the village, was educated at Badsey Council School, and for the past seven years has been on the staff of Mess J and R Fleming, Blackminster. She received from the staff a present of an electric clock, and also a cheque from Mr R J Fleming.
The bridegroom is well known in the Honeybourne district of which he is a native. He was educated at Honeybourne Council School and for the past 12 months has been on the staff at Wood & Willshaw of Bidford-on-Avon, who presented him with a canteen of cutlery for a wedding present, also receiving a cheque from Mr Don Wood. During the war he was on aerodrome construction being employed by Messrs L Lang.
The Vicar of Badsey, Rev J G Jeffreys, officiated, and Mr H King at the organ played the Bridal March from “Lohengrin” and Mendelssohn’s Wedding March. The chosen hymns were “Lead us Heavenly Father, lead us” and “The Voice that breathed o’er Eden”.
The bride, who was given away by her father, Mr C J Bird, was charmingly attired in a gown of white satin, her veil being held in place by a coronet of orange blossom. She carried a bouquet of pink carnations with trailing fern. She was attended by Mrs Muriel Morcombe, sister of the bride, who was attired in a dress of pink taffeta with matching headdress, and Miss Beatrice Lake, sister of the bridegroom, attired in a green taffeta dress with matching headdress. Both wore silver shoes and carried bouquets of trailing fern. Mr Albert Morcombe of Badsey (brother-in-law of the bride) was best man.
Approximately 100 guests attended the reception which was held at the Royal Oak Assembly Room, Badsey, and the happy couple were the recipients of numerous presents. The bridegroom’s presents to the bridesmaids consisted of diamante earrings and gilt brooches.
The honeymoon is being spent at Noth Cotes, near Grimsby, the bride travelling in a pale blue two-piece with white trimmings.
On leaving the church, Mr & Mrs Lake were presented with three silver horseshoes by Master Keith Thomas, Miss Daphne Haynes and Miss Ruth Coward. The bride’s veil was kindly lent to her by Mrs Sheila Crawford, late of Bretforton, and now residing in the United States of America.
A wedding peal was rung after the ceremony by the Badsey bellringers.
The bride and bridegroom will make their future temporary home at “The Grange”, Bretforton Road, Badsey.
