My dear Mother

Four birthdays in succession were completely forgotten by me until several days after the event; but I don’t forget yours so easily, and here is to wish you many happy returns of the day. I hope the next will be a peace birthday instead of a war one.

I am writing this late at night, by a totally unauthorised light; it will have to be short because reveille is not a moveable feast, and I find, as has always been my custom, that getting up is a hard task not improved by late bed-going.

I was very glad to see in this morning’s paper that Captain Tanner has the DSO. I am sure it was well earned. I always “fancied” him very much from the first time I saw him.

It was very nice finding Father in town when I went to Sydenham last weekend. You may be sure that I will come down and see you too if it is in any way possible, as I hope it will be.

Much love from
Your affectionate son
George
