Dear Mrs Sladden
I cannot tell you how happy I felt when I received your very kind letter.
I know that the news of our engagement came as a complete surprise to you, and I am delighted that Mr Sladden and you are so willing to include me in your family circle, although you know so little about me and my various shortcomings at present.
I am certain I shall love you and I look forward to the time when I shall make your acquaintance as one of the greatest of the pleasures in store for me.
Naturally, I am very unhappy at losing George again, and for such an indefinite period, but I realise the bravest way to bear one’s troubles is to keep silent and present a smiling face to the world.
I am still unable to understand why George has bestowed his love – so great a gift – on me for I am neither clever nor good-looking, and have no other claims to distinction.
I can only pray he will never have cause to regret his choice. I can assure you I shall ever do my utmost to make him happy, and considering how much I care for him, this should not be a difficult task.
I have met Kathleen, as you know, and I like her immensely, she has probably by this time, given you her opinion of me.
My mother sends her kindest regards to you, she has already written to George giving her full consent to our engagement.
Again thanking you for your kindly interest in me.
I remain
Yours very sincerely
Rosina B Lintott
