Quarterly Badsey Society newsletter sent to members. Events: AGM where Mike Lovatt stepped down and Maureen Spinks was elected as Chairman, Valerie Magan was elected as new Secretary and Tom Locke became a new Committee member, the first from Wickhamford. George Sangha of The Badsey Spar Shop won the Tony Jerram Award. Future events: Whit Walk along ancient footpaths of Bretforton, out to Allen Barn and returning to the Fleece Inn via Stoneford Lane and the dairy farm; Badsey Flower Show and launch of our market gardening DVD. The Badsey Archive team comprising Jane Neill, Maureen Spinks, Jane Croucher, Trevor Hockenhull, Gill Woods and Tony and Avril Wood have been cataloguing/preparing documents to assist searches for the new archive. Shirley Tutton has donated a copy of WEA Evesham History Workshop booklet “Crime in the Vale of Evesham 1651-1670”. Book mentions John White of Badsey who was accused of sheep-stealing/selling mutton to his sister Mary Bradshaw of Ruxley by Edward Bushell of Cleeve Prior and John said he bought it from Evesham’s Richard Horton. In 1651 John appeared at Broadway before Sir William Sambach JP and case was dismissed. The British Newspaper Archive has article from an 1840 Worcestershire Chronicle stating that Dr Beale Cooper committed Benjamin Pethard and Charles Davis (both families living at same house) for sheep-stealing from Badsey’s Mr Humphries by Inspector Arton and Policeman Baylis. On searching their house items stolen from Mr Thomas Sheaf of Offenham were also found. Richard Phillips pointed out this case but we do not know the outcome. Also included was poem “Badsey at Play” by Norman Cleaver about 1977 Silver Jubilee celebrations. Queen Elizabeth II celebrates 60 years on the throne in 2012 and we asked for residents memories of previous royal celebrations/coronations. Committee members: Maureen Spinks (Chairman), Valerie Magan (Secretary), Terry Sparrow (Treasurer), Will Dallimore, Ian Gibson, Tom Locke, Mike Lovatt, Jane Neill, Richard Phillips, Neil Thould.
