Badsey & Aldington Trail - Location 1

Pear Tree Fields

This 12 acre site for the use of the whole village comprises a heritage orchard, burial ground, 30 allotments, woodland, wildflower meadows and a wetland area.

At the official opening on Thursday 12 May 2022, Terry Sparrow, a native of Badsey and village historian said

“Just over 200 years ago this plot of land was part of one of Badsey’s common fields, a field known as Meerden, where villagers cultivated individual strips of land. This situation changed with the passing of the Badsey Enclosure Act in 1812, following which the land where we now stand became part of the Glebe, which is land belonging to the church, but given over, in turn, to successive vicars of the parish in order to augment their income, either by farming it themselves or letting it to others. I believe that the Rev Thomas Hunt, who was here from 1852 to 1887, was the last of our vicars who was also a farmer. In 1978 ownership of the Glebe was transferred from the parish to the Diocesan Board of Finance, from which Badsey and Aldington Parish Council has purchased this field.”

Further information can be found at the allotment entrance to the site.
