BADSEY BRIDE – LITTLETON GROOM

At St James’ Church, Badsey, on Saturday, Miss Edna May Salter, second daughter of Mr & Mrs E A Salter, 35 Horsebridge Avenue, Badsey, was married to Mr Gordon Basil Jones, eldest son of Mr & Mrs Len Jones of No 4 Station Road, South Littleton.  The Vicar (Rev W B Chapman) officiated and the hymns “Lead us Heavenly Father, lead us” and “The Voice that breathed o’er Eden” were sung.  Mrs G W Marshall was the organist and rendered appropriate wedding music.

The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a classic gown of satin-backed marocain with veil and white shoes.  She carried a bouquet of red carnations and maidenhair fern and also wore a gold locket (the gift of the bridegroom).  She was attended by three bridesmaids, Miss Megan Lloyd (cousin of the bridegroom), Miss Daphne Salter (bride’s sister) and Miss Marlene Salter (bride’s cousin).  The senior bridesmaid, Miss Lloyd, was attired in pink and a headdress of net trimmed with anemones and white shoes.  She carried a posy of anemones and fern and wore a brooch given her by the bridegroom.  The Misses Salter favoured dresses of peach crepe-de-chine with net headdresses trimmed with anemones and they each carried a posy of anemones and fern.  They also wore brooches, gifts of the bridegroom.  Mr Clifford Jones, brother of the bridegroom, was best man.  On leaving the church, the bride was presented with three silver horseshoes by Master Peter Salter (her brother), Miss D Hartwell and Mrs Pratt (friends).

A reception attended by 60 guests was held at The Wheatsheaf Inn Assembly Room.  The gifts included the three-tier wedding cake from Brewer’s Bakery (where the bride was employed), a dinner service from the staff of Brewer’s Bakery, and armchairs (from Mr & Mrs P T Pratt (the bridegroom’s employer).

Later in the day the bride placed her bouquet on the grave of her grandfather, the late Mr A Salter, in St James’ churchyard.

The bride is a native of Badsey and shortly after leaving Badsey School took up employment at Brewer’s Bakery, Badsey.  The bridegroom is a native of South Littleton and during the 1939-45 war saw service with the Royal Navy in many parts of the world.  He is a member of the Littletons and Cleeve Prior branch of the British Legion and a playing member of the King Edward Darts Club.
