1st September 1828 – Sale of Harrington House and Orchard Way cottage

The following sale of two houses at Badsey [the present-day Harrington House and the neighbouring Hollywood Villa] was advertised in The Worcester Journal of 28th August 1828:

BADSEY, WORCESTERSHIRE
Eligible FREEHOLD PROPERTY, either for
Investment or Occupation
TO BE SOLD BY AUCTION,
By GEORGE TREDWELL,

Harrington HouseOn Monday, the 1st day of September 1828 at the White Hart Commercial Inn, Evesham, in the County of Worcester, at five o’clock in the afternoon, in Two Lots (under and subject to such Conditions of Sale as will be then produced)

LOT 1 – An Ancient FREEDHOLD MESSUAGE, TENEMENT, or FARM-HOUSE, situate on the west side and nearly in the centre of the pleasant Village of BADSEY, with the Rick Yards, Barns, Stable, Cart-houses, Cow-Sheds, and other necessary Outbuildings, together with a capital ORCHARD, and a large and productive GARDEN adjoining thereto.

The Messuage consists of two Parlours, two Kitchens, Dairy, Brewhouse, and Drink-house, three good Lodging-Rooms and two Attics; commanding a frontage of upwards of 50 yards, is well watered, and contains with the said Orchard, Two Acres, or thereabouts.

The Land is of the best quality, the poor rates are low, the roads good, the neighbourhood respectable; and from the contiguity of the Premises to Evesham, It is a truly desirable situation for a Dealer, Maltster, or Baker, as the Outbuildings might, at a trifling expense, be converted into commodious Granaries; or a Malthouse, on an extensive scale.

LOT 2 – A Stone-built COTTAGE, WITH AN EXCELLENT Garden behind the same, also situate on the west side of the said Village.  The Proprietor will reserve a right of Road on the north side of this Lot (to other property of his, nearly adjoining thereto), through, over, and along a passage of four feet and a half wide for himself, agents, servants, and tenants.

Mr Joseph Jones, of Badsey aforesaid, will cause the Lots to be shewn, and any further particulars may be known on application to him, or to Messrs Phelps and Best, Solicitors, or the Auctioneer, Evesham.

The sale of Harrington House was occasioned by the death of Thomas Scardefield, the owner, in May 1828.  Hollywood Villa was let out to tenants as the owner, William George Wilson, had never lived in Badsey.  It is thought that Joseph Jones, a farmer, and who lived nearby, was acting on behalf of both parties but, whereas Harrington House was sold in 1828, Hollywood Villa was not sold until 1842.
