Saturday 3 July 1915 – Mr Sladden’s rose garden

BADSEY – ROSES

Mr. Sladden is throwing his rose garden open on Sunday next from 5 to 8p.m., and in such a fine season this well-known collection should be well worth a visit. On this occasion visitors will be asked to pay a small entrance fee towards the village fund for providing extra comforts for the local sailors and soldiers serving abroad. We understand that many parcels have been sent out already and have given much pleasure to the recipients.

Saturday 6 March 1915 – War lecture by Julius Sladden and George Sladden

WAR LECTURE

A lecture on the war was held in the Council Schools on Friday evening. Mr. J. Sladden, in opening the meeting, gave an interesting description of the latest phase of the war – the bombardment of the Dardanelles. He explained the geographical situation, and the importance of forcing them. The supply of wheat and barley which could pass through from Russia would probably lower prices in this country.

Saturday 17 February 1917 – Badsey Whist Drive in aid of Belgian Refugee Fund

BADSEY WHIST DRIVE

A most successful whist drive took place on Monday in the Badsey Old Schools, in aid of the Belgian Refugee Fund which resulted in a clear profit of £2 10s. Twenty-five tables were occupied, the prizes being won by the following:

Ladies: Miss Ida Dore 1, Miss Nellie Agg 2, Mrs. Bond 3, Mrs. H. Johns consolation.

Gentlemen: Mr. W. Harwood 1, Mr. W. Herbert 2, Mr. J. Keyte 3, Mr. J. H. Walker consolation.

Saturday 16 December 1916 – Another Badsey Whist Drive

BADSEY WHIST DRIVE

On Wednesday a whist drive took place at the Old Schools, Badsey, in aid of the Abbey Manor Red Cross Hospital, and to provide cigarettes for Badsey soldiers. Thirty-one tables were occupied. The prizes were gained as follows:

Gents; Mr. J. Nightingale 1, Mr. A Avins 2, Mr. J. Such 3. Hidden number, Mrs. W. Geden.

Ladies: Miss Meredith 1, Mrs. W. Geden 2, Miss R. Brewer 3. Hidden number, Miss Elgie.

The proceeds amounted to £10.

Saturday 20 February 1915 – Badsey Whist Drive in aid of Comforts for local Soldiers

BADSEY WHIST DRIVE

A Whist Drive, organised by Mrs A. Sears, Miss Sladden and others, in aid of “Comforts for our Local Soldiers” was held in the Old Schools, Badsey, on Tuesday. Mr. G. Marshall acted as steward. Twenty-eight tables were occupied and seven prizes were given by the following:

Ladies: First, Miss C Johns; second, Miss B Kelland; third, “Three Old Maids”, Misses K Enstone, M. Bird and E Hardiman.

Saturday 21 October 1916 – Badsey Harvest Festival

BADSEY HARVEST FESTIVAL

The annual harvest festival was observed at Badsey on Sunday last. The services were Holy Communion at 7, 8 and 12, Matins at 11, and Evensong at 6.The Vicar officiated at all services, and preached at Evensong. The collections throughout the day, amounting to £4 17s., were for the Evesham Cottage Hospital. A quantity of vegetables and fruit was sent to the Christ Church Mission, Notting Hill.

Dore, P. Crisp, A. Warmington, D. Jelfs, and B. Dore.
