Saturday 6 May 1916 - Salonica Poem by Ernest Pillinger

SALONIQUE

“EEP” of Badsey – better known we believe in that district as Ernest – sends us the following verses from Salonica, where he says, he and his comrades are quite happy and smiling:

There’s a little place out East called Salonique,

Where they’re sending British Tommies every week

When you view it from the sea

It’s a fine sight I’ll agree

And you think you’ll have a spree at Salonique.

When you’re dumped upon the quay at Salonique,

And the smell that meets you there seems to speak.

Saturday 2 March 1918 – Extra money for the Soldiers’ Fund

FOR THE BADSEY SOLDIERS

To the Editor of the “Journal & Advertiser”

Sir

Since your statement in the last issue, I have, on behalf of committee, much pleasure in stating that, owing to unlooked-for subscriptions coming in, we are now in a position to hand over to the local boys (who number for the three parishes about 200) the sum of £164. The committee are at once taking steps to distribute the money to the lads serving their country. I am pleased to say the above showed a clear balance sheet, as expenses were nil.

Saturday 19 January 1918 – Entertainment at Badsey to raise money for parcels

BADSEY ENTERTAINMENT

At the Old Schools a very successful entertainment was given on Wednesday and Thursday week, to raise if possible sufficient money to send each soldier now serving a parcel. Mr.T. H. Knight (the Badsey organist) made all the arrangements and on both nights the room was packed. On Wednesday evening the chair was taken by Mr. C. A. Binyon and on Thursday by Mr. W.W.Blake.

Saturday 14 April 1917 – Concert at Aldington for “the boys”

ALDINGTON

FOR THE “BOYS”

A most successful and enjoyable concert was held on Wednesday week, proceeds towards a fund to send parcels of comforts to the boys gone from the village. The room was crowded, the amount taken being £8 4s. Many thanks are due the ladies and gentlemen who came out from Evesham to help make the concert so successful. The expenses only amounting to 6s 6d, it is hoped soon to despatch a substantial parcel to each one.
