My dear Juliet
I am so very very sorry to hear of your sad news. I just want to express my sympathy and, as usual, don’t know how to do it. I can quite imagine what it must be to have a death in the house, and I do hope you are not killing yourself with worrying.
I don’t suppose you will want to be bothered with school news, though there is heaps to tell, so I will stop now, although I am afraid this disgustingly short and feeble letter will not serve to tell you how sorry I am. Please, whatever you do, don’t answer it, as I am certain you will have enough trouble with relations and friends’ letters.
Yours very affectionately
Rayne
