Charles Grimmitt was born in Beckford, Winchcombe, Glos., in 1888, the son of a market gardener. He was living in Wickhamford around 1930 and his daughter married there in December 1931, when his occupation was recorded as a carpenter. In some records his name is spelled as ‘Grimmett’ and a man of this name served as a Lance Corporal (No. 2586) in the 1st Battalion, Gloucester Regt. At some point he transferred to the 12th Batt. and was awarded the Victory and British War Medals. In the Medal records he was then a Warrant Officer.
In July 1927 he was evicted from his cottage in Laverton due to rent arrears of over £50. In 1930 he was living, with his wife, Emily, at 11 Council Houses, Wickhamford, but was evicted from there in February 1932, for rent arrears of £8/11/0d. A report in the papers in 1936 into illegal betting in Evesham, listed about 20 men in court, including Charles Grimmitt. If he had a gambling habit that may have accounted for his rent problems. He died in Evesham in 1940.
