weddingBADSEY WEDDING – South Littleton Bridegroom

St James’ Church, Badsey, was the scene of a pretty wedding on Saturday morning when Miss Katherine Mary Perkins, eldest daughter of Mr and the late Mrs J Perkins of 5 Synehurst, Badsey, was married to Mr Phillip William Ballard, only son of Mr & Mrs P Ballard of 14 Shinehill Lane, South Littleton.

The bride, who is very popular in Badsey, was educated at Badsey Council School.  She was on the staff of Messrs W Fleming & Son, Blackminster, for some years.  The bridegroom comes from a well known South Littleton family and is, by trade, a market gardener.  Educated at Littleton Council School, he served for five years in the army in the Far East.

The bride, who was given away by her father, was charmingly attired in a heavy brocaded satin gown with a net veil held in place with a wreath of gardenias.  She carried a bouquet of pale pink carnations with trailing maidenhair fern.  She was attended by three bridesmaids – Miss Doreen Perkins and Miss Mavis Perkins, sister and cousin of the bride, also Miss Doreen Harman, friend of the bride.  All three were attired in dresses of old gold satin with headdresses of wreaths of gold leaves.  Each carried bouquets of bronze chrysanthemums.  Mr J Allchurch, brother-in-law of the bridegroom, was best man.

The choral service was conducted by the Vicar of Badsey, Rev J G Jeffreys, and Mrs Jeffreys was at the organ.  The hymns, “Lead us Heavenly Father, lead us” and “The Voice that breathed o’er Eden” were sung by the choir and large congregation present.

A reception at The Royal Oak Assembly Rooms, Badsey, was attended by over 70 guests.

The bridegroom’s present to the bride was an electric clock and she presented him with a leather fitted dressing set.  The bridesmaids were presented with diamante brooches by the bridegroom.  As the happy couple left the church they were presented with five lucky horseshoes by Rosalyn Allchurch, Reggie Perkins, Valerie Harman, Christopher Ellison and Rosemarie Jones.

Mr & Mrs P Ballard are spending their honeymoon at Bournemouth, the bride travelling in a blue two-piece with white trimming and an oatmeal coat.

During the day a band of ringers rang a wedding peal on St James’ Bells, Badsey.

The bride and bridegroom will make their future home at 5 Synehurst, Badsey.
