BADSEY BRIDE FOR OFFENHAM MAN
Miss M B Hartwell – Mr C L Andrews
Attired in a tulle gown over taffeta embroidered with sequins and wearing a headdress of orange blossom, Miss Marjorie Bessie Hartwell, only daughter of Mr & Mrs R Hartwell, 1 Cotswold View, Badsey, was married at St James’ Church, Badsey, on Saturday, to Mr Cyril Leslie Andrews, elder son of Mr & Mrs G Andrews, 4 Leasowe Road, Offenham.
Carrying a bouquet of pink roses with trailing fern, the bride was given away by her father and was attended by four bridesmaids. They were the Misses Janet Andrews, bridegroom’s sister, and Ruth Miller, bride’s cousin, both of whom wore dresses of blue tulle over blue taffeta with matching veils and headdresses, and the Misses Susan Hartwell, bride’s niece, and Janice Grove, bridegroom’s cousin, who wore gold taffeta with bonnets to match. The senior bridesmaids carried bouquets of sweet peas with trailing fern, while the other attendants carried mixed posies of anemones.
Mr John Haines of Offenham, bridegroom’s friend, was best man.
The Vicar of Badsey, the Rev W B Chapman, conducted the service while Mrs G Marshall was the organist. The hymns sung during the service included “Lead us, Heavenly Father, Lead us” and “The Voice that breathed o’er Eden”. As the bride left the church, she was presented with several lucky horseshoes.
Ninety guests attended the subsequent reception held at The Wheatsheaf Inn Assembly Rooms.
The honeymoon is being spent in Weymouth, the bride travelling in a costume of heather mixture with pink accessories.
The bridegroom gave the bride a fur coat, while from her he received a gold watch. To the bridesmaids he gave diamante necklaces and silver bracelets.
The bride was educated at Badsey Council School and at Blackminster Senior School and, with her husband, has been a member for several years of Offenham Choral Society, who presented the bride and bridegroom with a handsome wedding gift. Since leaving school she has been on the staff of Messrs Booth & Bomford, Evesham, from whom she received gifts.
The bridegroom is a popular market gardener and was also educated at Blackminster Senior School. Keenly interested in music, he sings in the choir of St Mary and St Milburgh Church, Offenham. He is also a talented player of handbells and is a member of the Offenham Handbell Ringers, who presented him with a gift on the occasion of his wedding.
