BROADWAY DIVISION

There were three polling stations in this division, viz – at Broadway, Badsey and Hampton.  Both candidates – Mr Isaac Averill and Mr Thomas Byrd – have been actively engaged in the contest for some time past and the general expectation was that Mr Byrd would win by a good majority as he seemed to carry the votes of the labourers and allotment holders.  As time advance, however, his chances appeared to diminish, as some of his supporters had made rather wild statements which told against him in the estimation of public opinion.

A HUNDRED YEARS AGO

FROM “BERROW’S WORCESTER JOURNAL”, November 1 1792

There is now a fruit tree in full blossom in the garden of the Rev Mr Jones of Badsey near Evesham in this county.  There are also in the same garden strawberries in blossom.

An apple tree which was planted last Christmas in the parish of Badsey has blossomed and yielded fruit twice this season.  Strange as this may appear it is an absolute fact.

ACTION AGAINST A RAILWAY COMPANY

At the County Court on Friday an action was brought by Mr Joseph Jones, market gardener, Badsey, against the Great Western Railway Company, claiming £7 10s for delay in delivering pears consigned from Birmingham and damages for loss of market.  Judgment was given for £1 11s 6d, including £1 paid into court.

STEALING TURNIP-TOPS

Charles Bedenham of Evesham, labourer, was summoned by Mr Thomas Byrd of Badsey for stealing turnip-tops at Aldington in the parish of Badsey on the 1st inst.  Convicted and fined 1s and 8s 6d costs.
