Saturday 5 February 1938 – Death of John Keen, aged 80

DEATH OF MR JOHN KEEN

The death of Mr John Keen (80), one of Badsey’s oldest inhabitants, occurred suddenly on Friday at the home of his daughter, Mrs H Green, Church View, Badsey.  Mr Keen was a well-known figure in the village and his cheery nature will be sadly missed.

He was born at Bengeowrth but moved to Badsey early in life.  He was a noted athlete in his youth, winning many prizes at local sports meetings.

Friday 23 January 1953 – Plans for the Coronation celebrations

CORONATION CELEBRATIONS

A committee meeting was held at the Council Schools, Mr G A King presiding.  Mr G Austen Jones reported that it would cost approximately £100 to put on a firework display on Coronation Day.  It was resolved no firework display be included in the celebrations.  Mr D A Jelfs reported that an invitation had been extended to Aldington residents to join with Badsey in the celebrations, but he understood that Aldington were organising their own celebrations.

Friday 23 January 1953 – Death of Winifred Collett

Mrs Winifred Collett, widow the late Mr George Collett, of Belle Vue, Badsey, died in Evesham Hospital on Monday, only two days after being taken ill.  Aged 60, she was the third daughter of the late Mr & Mrs Richard Keen of Ivy House, Badsey, and lived in the village all her life.  Her husband predeceased her five years ago.  She is survived by her only child, Mrs Ruth Double, Drayton, near Daventry.

Saturday 8 November 1941 – Francis Wheeler and Doris Haynes rescue man from burning plane

RESCUED CREWS OF BURNING ‘PLANES

The bravery of a Badsey, near Evesham, market gardener and his 26 years old daughter in rescuing an airman from a blazing ‘plane, which crashed in adjoining ground, has been officially recognised by the King.

His Majesty has been pleased to give orders for the publication in The London Gazette of the names of Francis Robert Wheeler of 33 Synehurst, Badsey, and his daughter, Mrs Doris May Haynes of 17 Council Houses, Cow Honeybourne, as having received an expression of commendation for their brave conduct.

SUTTON, George Joseph (1882-1964) – and family of Wickhamford

George Sutton was born on 29th December 1882 in Bengeworth, Evesham, the son of David Sutton, a market gardener, and his wife Louisa. In 1906, George married an Evesham girl, Annie Marie Cook, at St Peters Church, Bengeworth and sometime between his marriage and the 1911 census George moved to what is now 95 Pitchers Hill.  This detached house that was part of the Wickhamford Estate, owned by the Trustees of J.P.L Lord, and is now occupied by the Cats Protection League. 

JOSEPH, Max (1910-1982) and SAMUEL, Harold (1912-1987) – WWII occupants of The Ridge, Knowle Hill

The Ridge, a house on Knowle Hill, is located within Wickhamford parish, but its access in on the Badsey to Evesham road, which is outside of the parish boundary.  The 1939 Electoral Roll gives the occupants as John and Lilian Little, but by the time that the 1939 Register was drawn up, at the outbreak of the Second World War, they had moved to Watford.
